Welcome to the World of the Trapp Family

    The Sound of Music

In November 1959, the musical “The Sound of Music” celebrated its Broadway premiere. Almost 50 years later, both the film and the musical about the Trapp family from Salzburg are still generating extraordinary interest all over the world.

The musical and film versions of “The Sound of Music” tell the story of the Trapp family. The year is 1938: Maria, a novice nun at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, is instructed by her Mother Superior to take the children of Baron von Trapp under her care. The Baron’s wife has passed away and there is no one to look after the kids.

Maria coaxes the children into singing and they quickly build a close rapport. Before long, the Baron falls in love with the novice nun Maria and the two get married. But then troops from Nazi Germany march into Austria, which becomes incorporated into the Third Reich through the so-called Anschluss. Since Baron von Trapp refuses to serve in the German Wehrmacht, he becomes a target of Nazi persecution. Just in time, the Trapp family manages to flee across the Swiss border.

This captivating tale is based on the recollections of Maria Augusta von Trapp, who wrote down the Story of the Trapp Family and their experiences. Two German movies, “The Trapp Family” (1956) and “The Trapp family in America” (1958) were additional sources for the American musical “The Sound of Music.” This Broadway smash was a collaboration between Richard Rodgers, who composed the music, and Oscar Hammerstein, who penned the lyrics. Since its premiere in 1959, the musical has been performed a grand total of 1,443 times!

    The world-famous musical

In 1965, American director Robert Wise brought “The Sound of Music” to the big screen on the strength of the musical’s success. It became a blockbuster that still ranks as one of the most popular films of all times. Today, in Salzburg, you can take “Sound of Music” tours and see the original shooting locations. At select locations in the city, you can also catch live concerts featuring the Trapp Family songs.
